About BUDECO

The Busega Development Community (BUDECO)Jumuiya ya Maendeleo ya Wanabusega — is a registered non-governmental organisation founded to connect, unite, and empower all people of Busega origin, wherever they live.

Born from a gathering of Busega diaspora on 23 June 2012 at Dar es Salaam, BUDECO was formally established on 23 March 2013. It is non-political, non-religious, and non-tribal — owned and governed entirely by its members through democratic organs.

BUDECO's overarching purpose is to strengthen solidarity, advance socio-economic development, and preserve the cultural heritage of the Busega community for generations to come.

A Strategic Crossroads

Busega District occupies one of the most strategically positioned locations in north-western Tanzania. Bordering Lake Victoria — Africa's largest lake — to the north, and serving as the primary gateway to the Serengeti National Park through the renowned Ndabaka Gate to the west.

Connected by Road

Two major paved national trunk roads cross the district: the Mwanza–Musoma Highway (T4) running south to north, and the T36 Highway linking Shinyanga and Mara Regions. The town of Lamadi serves as a regional commerce junction where both roads diverge.

The Sukuma People

Busega is home to the Sukuma — Tanzania's largest ethnic group, numbering over 5.5 million people across the Lake Victoria basin. A Bantu-speaking people of the savannah, the Sukuma are celebrated for their community spirit, rich artistic tradition, and deep connection to the land.

The Sukuma of Busega possess a rich tradition of natural medicine — over 42 animal and plant species used in time-honoured healing practices, respected alongside modern healthcare.

Elder Governance

Respected community elders guide village affairs, mediate disputes, and preserve cultural observances — forming a vital layer of wisdom alongside formal local government.
